Job Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
- Ability to perform friendly, courteous and tactful relations with customers and co-workers
- Effective communication skills including hearing and speech
- Able to complete written forms
- Capable of conducting visual inspections and reading merchandise information
- Ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Competent in operating check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners and scales
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop and twist frequently
- Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination required
- Ability to learn and memorize considerable information including PLU codes and company policies
- Must ensure accuracy in scanning, verifying sales, and handling monetary transactions
- Occasionally able to use blades for box cutting
- Ability to use household cleaners for maintaining work area
- Capable of managing high stress situations including dealing with unsatisfied customers and high transaction volumes
- Completion of food safety/handlers cards and tobacco and alcohol sales certifications as required by law
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous retail or customer service experience is advantageous
- Strong communication skills including verbal and written abilities
- Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Ability to learn and memorize product codes and company procedures
- Customer-focused attitude with ability to work well within a team environment
- Ability to handle cash transactions accurately
- Capacity to engage positively with customers
- Familiarity with retail point-of-sale equipment is an asset
Job Duties
- Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
- Maintains an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with emphasis on taking care of the customer
- Operates check stand equipment such as cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders
- Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
- Processes monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, food stamps, coupons and refunds while adhering to cash handling policies
- Maintains knowledge of current product locations and ensures proper pricing
- Keeps the check stand clean, neat, properly stocked and ensures a safe work area
- Stocks, prices and rotates merchandise
- May be assigned to self-checkout lane or customer service counter
- Follows all applicable laws regarding sales of restricted items
- Adheres to USDA Food Stamp and WIC voucher procedures
- Monitors and assists at self-checkout stations to expedite transactions and maintain safety
- Responds to alerts and errors at self-checkout stations
- Monitors multiple simultaneous transactions and verifies payments
- Actively assists customers using self-checkout to ensure accuracy and prevent shrinkage
- Prioritizes safety of employees and customers by addressing concerns according to company policy
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed
