Job Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • ability to work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • perform friendly, courteous, and tactful relations with customers and co-workers with composure
  • communicate effectively (hearing and speech) to perform customer relation tasks
  • complete written forms accurately
  • conduct visual inspections and read information on merchandise
  • lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and occasionally up to 50 lbs
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales
  • stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently for long periods
  • manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • learn and memorize considerable information including PLU codes, product locations, check stand procedures, and company policies
  • ensure accuracy in scanning and verifying sales and handling monetary transactions with mental alertness and basic math skills
  • occasionally use blades for box cutting
  • use household cleaners to maintain work area
  • navigate high stress situations and manage volatile or unsatisfied customers
  • as required by applicable state and local laws, obtain food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification (e.g., TAM card)

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • prior experience in retail or customer service is beneficial
  • ability to operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales
  • strong communication skills including hearing and speech to perform customer relation tasks
  • basic math skills for handling transactions accurately
  • ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 50 lbs
  • manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • ability to work varied shifts including night, weekends, and holidays
  • customer service oriented with patience and composure
  • knowledge of basic food safety, tobacco and alcohol sales certification where applicable

Job Duties

  • Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • maintain an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of the customer
  • operate check stand equipment such as a cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders using two aisles
  • engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, processing coupons, and refunds
  • maintain knowledge of current product location, monitor UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
  • maintain clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensure safe and secure work area
  • stock, price and rotate merchandise
  • operate multi station self-checkout lanes and customer service counters as assigned
  • follow all state and federal laws concerning the sale of any restricted or regulated items including tobacco and alcohol
  • adhere to all USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
  • move regularly within SCO area to expedite transactions and maintain attentive presence
  • initiate and engage contact with customers during transactions
  • respond to SCO stations to review and clear alerts or errors
  • monitor multiple simultaneous transactions and verify payments
  • assist customers at self-checkout kiosks to ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage
  • maintain awareness of the self-checkout area and customers
  • prioritize safety of employees and customers by addressing or reporting concerns
