Job Requirements
- Be at least 16 years of age or older
- Ability to work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation including night, weekends and holidays
- Perform friendly, courteous and tactful relations with customers and co-workers
- Communicate effectively including hearing and speech capabilities
- Complete written forms
- Conduct visual inspection and read information on merchandise
- Lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales
- Stand or sit for long periods and perform physical activities including walking rapidly, bending, stooping, twisting and turning
- Demonstrate manual dexterity and good hand/eye coordination
- Learn and memorize PLU codes, product locations, check stand and keyboard procedures, and company policies
- Ensure accuracy in scanning and verifying sales and handling monetary transactions with basic math and mental alertness
- Occasionally use blades for box cutting
- Use household cleaners to maintain work area
- Navigate high stress situations, handle volatile or unsatisfied customers, and manage high volume transactions
- Obtain and maintain food safety/handlers cards and tobacco and alcohol sales certification as required by law
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous experience in a retail or customer service role is advantageous
- Ability to operate cash registers, scanners, and scales
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Ability to handle monetary transactions accurately
- Knowledge of store policies and procedures is beneficial
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Capability to work flexible shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
- Certification or willing to obtain tobacco and alcohol sales certification as required by local laws
Job Duties
- Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
- Maintain an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on customer care
- Operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners and scales to process customer orders using two aisles
- Engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
- Process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, coupons and refunds
- Maintain knowledge of current product location, monitor UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
- Maintain clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensure a safe and secure work area
- Stock, price and rotate merchandise
- Assist at multi station self-checkout lanes when needed
- Provide service at the customer service counter as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Follow all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items such as tobacco and alcohol
- Adhere to USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
- Engage with customers at self-checkout kiosks to assist and ensure transaction accuracy
- Respond to self-checkout alerts and errors
- Monitor multiple simultaneous transactions
- Prioritize safety of employees and customers by addressing or reporting concerns as per company policy
