Job Requirements

  • must be 16 years of age or older
  • ability to work varied shifts including night, weekends and holidays
  • able to perform friendly, courteous, and tactful interactions with customers and co-workers
  • able to communicate effectively for customer relations
  • able to complete written forms
  • able to perform visual inspections and read merchandise information
  • able to lift and maneuver objects weighing up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • able to operate check stand equipment
  • able to stand, sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently
  • capacity to memorize a considerable amount of information including PLU codes and company policies
  • ensure accuracy in scanning and verifying sales
  • able to occasionally use blades for box cutting
  • use household cleaners to maintain work area
  • able to navigate and manage potentially high stress situations and handle unsatisfied customers
  • food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification as required by state and local laws

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • previous retail or cashier experience beneficial but not required
  • strong customer service skills
  • basic math skills for handling transactions
  • ability to operate check stand equipment including cash registers, scanners and scales
  • good communication skills including hearing and speech
  • ability to learn and memorize product codes, pricing, and company policies
  • capable of working in a fast-paced environment
  • ability to handle monetary transactions accurately
  • manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination

Job Duties

  • Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • maintain an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with emphasis on taking care of the customer
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners and scales to process customer orders
  • engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, food stamps, coupons, and refunds
  • maintain knowledge of product locations, monitor UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
  • maintain clean, neat and stocked check stands and ensure safe and secure work areas
  • stock, price and rotate merchandise
  • may be assigned to multi-station self-checkout lane or customer service counter as needed
  • perform other duties as assigned
  • follow all state and federal laws concerning sale of restricted or regulated items
  • adhere to USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
  • regularly move within self-checkout area to expedite transactions, maintain attentive presence and keep area clear of safety hazards
  • initiate and engage contact with customers at self-checkout
  • respond to self-checkout stations to review and clear errors
  • monitor multiple simultaneous transactions and verify payment
  • actively assist customers at self-checkout kiosks to ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage
  • maintain high awareness of self-checkout area and anticipate customer needs
  • prioritize safety by addressing or reporting concerns
