Job Requirements

  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • work varied shifts including night, weekends, and holidays
  • perform friendly, courteous, tactful relations with customers and coworkers
  • communicate clearly using hearing and speech
  • complete written forms
  • conduct visual inspections and read merchandise information
  • lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales
  • stand or sit for long periods
  • walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently
  • manual dexterity and good hand eye coordination
  • learn and memorize a considerable amount of information including PLU codes and company policies
  • ensure accuracy in scanning and verifying sales with mental alertness and basic math skills
  • occasionally use blades for box cutting
  • use household cleaners to maintain work area
  • navigate high stress situations and handle high volume of transactions
  • comply with state and local laws for food safety, tobacco and alcohol sales certification where required

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • excellent customer service skills
  • ability to operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales
  • familiarity with cash handling and monetary transaction procedures
  • strong communication skills including hearing and speech
  • ability to learn and memorize product codes and company policies
  • basic math skills for handling transactions
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • experience in retail or customer-facing role is a plus
  • understanding of food safety regulations is an advantage

Job Duties

  • Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • maintain an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders using two aisles
  • engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, coupons, and refunds
  • maintain knowledge of current product location, monitor UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
  • maintain clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensure safe and secure work area
  • stock, price and rotate merchandise
  • operate self-checkout lane as needed
  • perform duties at customer service counter as needed
  • follow all state and federal laws concerning restricted or regulated items
  • adhere to USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
  • for self-checkout: regularly move within area to expedite transactions and keep area safe
  • initiate and engage contact with customers during transactions
  • respond to alerts and errors on self-checkout stations
  • monitor multiple simultaneous transactions
  • actively assist customers to ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage
  • maintain high awareness of self-checkout area and anticipate customer needs
  • prioritize safety of employees and customers
