Job Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
  • ability to perform friendly, courteous and tactful customer relations
  • ability to communicate effectively using hearing and speech
  • ability to complete written forms
  • capability to conduct visual inspection and read information on merchandise
  • ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • ability to operate check stand equipment
  • ability to stand or sit for long periods and perform repetitive tasks
  • must have manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • ability to learn and memorize considerable information including PLU codes, product location, policies and procedures
  • ability to ensure accuracy in scanning and monetary transactions
  • willingness to use blades for box cutting and approved household cleaners to maintain work area
  • ability to navigate high stress situations and manage unsatisfied customers
  • comply with company policies and applicable laws
  • as required by law, food safety/handlers cards and tobacco/alcohol sales certifications may be required

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • excellent customer service skills
  • ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • ability to handle cash and monetary transactions accurately
  • capability to operate checkout equipment such as cash registers, scanners and scales
  • physical ability to stand, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist and lift up to 50 lbs
  • ability to memorize product codes and store layout
  • ability to handle stressful situations and maintain composure with customers
  • experience in retail or customer service environment preferred

Job Duties

  • Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • maintain an atmosphere of friendly and enthusiastic customer service
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders
  • engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, coupons and refunds adhering to cash handling policies
  • maintain knowledge of product location, UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
  • keep check stand clean, neat and properly stocked
  • stock, price and rotate merchandise
  • operate multi-station self-checkout lane or customer service counter as assigned
  • follow all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items
  • adhere to USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
  • move regularly within SCO area to expedite transactions and maintain safety
  • engage customers at self-checkout kiosks
  • monitor and clear alerts or errors in customer transactions
  • monitor multiple transactions and verify payments
  • maintain high awareness of checkout area and anticipate customer needs
  • prioritize safety by reporting concerns
