Job Requirements

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • work varied shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
  • perform friendly, courteous and tactful relations with customers and co-workers
  • communicate effectively including hearing and speech
  • complete written forms
  • conduct visual inspections and read information on merchandise
  • lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners and scales
  • stand or sit for long periods and perform physical movements such as walking rapidly, bending, stooping, twisting and turning
  • manual dexterity and good hand eye coordination
  • learn and memorize considerable information including PLU codes and procedures
  • ensure accuracy in scanning and verifying sales with mental alertness and math skills
  • occasionally use blades for box cutting
  • use household cleaners to maintain work area
  • navigate high stress situations and handle volatile or unsatisfied customers
  • comply with all company policies and applicable laws
  • food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification as required by state and local laws

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • previous retail or customer service experience is advantageous
  • basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • ability to operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners and scales
  • effective communication skills for interacting with customers and coworkers
  • ability to memorize product locations, PLU codes and company policies
  • capability to handle monetary transactions accurately
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • commitment to compliance with relevant laws regarding sales of restricted items
  • strong customer service orientation

Job Duties

  • Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • maintain an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of the customer
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders using two aisles to check customers
  • engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, coupons and refunds, and adhere to all cash handling and lane accountability policies
  • maintain knowledge of current product location, monitor UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
  • maintain clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensure safe and secure work area
  • stock, price and rotate merchandise
  • may be assigned to a multi-station self-checkout lane as needed
  • may be assigned to the customer service counter as needed
  • perform other duties as assigned or needed
  • follow all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items such as tobacco and alcohol
  • adhere to all USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
  • regularly move within SCO area to expedite transactions, maintain attentive presence and keep area clear of safety hazards
  • initiate and engage contact with customers as they process transactions
  • respond to SCO stations to accurately review, address and clear alerts and errors with customer transactions
  • monitor multiple simultaneous transactions and verify payment in fast paced setting
  • actively and routinely engage with customers at self-checkout kiosks to assist in transactions, ensure accuracy, and limit shrinkage
  • maintain a high level of awareness of the self-checkout area and customers
  • prioritize safety of employees and customers by addressing or reporting concerns as provided by company policy
