Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • ability to work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • ability to perform friendly, courteous, tactful relations with customers and coworkers with composure
  • effective hearing and speech communication skills
  • ability to complete written forms
  • capability to conduct visual inspection and read information on merchandise
  • ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • ability to operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales
  • ability to stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently
  • manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • ability to learn and memorize a considerable amount of information including PLU codes, product locations, check stand and keyboard procedures, and company policies
  • accuracy in scanning and verifying sales and handling monetary transactions using basic math skills
  • ability to occasionally use blades for box cutting
  • capacity to use household cleaners to maintain work area
  • ability to navigate and manage potentially high stress situations and interactions with upset or unsatisfied customers
  • food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification as required by applicable state and local laws

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • previous customer service experience is a plus
  • ability to communicate effectively with customers and coworkers
  • basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • ability to learn and memorize product codes and company policies
  • capable of operating cash register, scanner, and scale
  • must be at least 16 years of age
  • manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination

  • knowledge of state and local laws regarding food safety, tobacco and alcohol sales as required

Job Duties

  • Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • maintains an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis of taking care of the customer
  • operates check stand equipment such as a cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders using two aisles to check customers
  • engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • processes monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, processing coupons, and refunds
  • understands and adheres to all cash handling and lane accountability policies and procedures
  • maintains knowledge of current product location, monitors UPC codes and ensures proper pricing
  • maintains clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensures safe and secure work area
  • stocks, prices and rotates merchandise
  • may be assigned to a multi station self-checkout lane as needed
  • may be assigned to the customer service counter as needed
  • performs other duties as assigned or needed
  • follows all state and federal laws concerning the sale of any restricted or regulated items such as tobacco and alcohol
  • adheres to all United States Department of Agriculture Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
  • regularly moves within self-checkout area to expedite transactions, maintain attentive presence and keep area clear of safety hazards
  • initiates and engages contact with customers as they process their transactions
  • responds to self-checkout stations to accurately review, address and clear alerts and/or errors with customer transactions
  • monitors multiple simultaneous transactions and verifies payment in fast paced setting
  • actively and routinely engages with customers at self-checkout kiosks to assist in transactions, ensure accuracy, and limit shrinkage
  • maintains a high level of awareness of the self-checkout area and customers
  • prioritizes safety of employees and customers by addressing or reporting concerns as provided by company policy
