Job Requirements

  • must be 16 years of age or older
  • ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • ability to perform friendly, courteous, and tactful relations with customers and coworkers
  • ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • ability to complete written forms
  • ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • ability to operate check stand equipment
  • ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently for extended periods
  • manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • ability to memorize a considerable amount of information including product and keyboard procedures
  • mental alertness and basic math skills for transaction accuracy
  • ability to use blades for box cutting occasionally
  • ability to maintain a safe and clean work area
  • ability to handle high stress situations and unsatisfied customers
  • food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification as required by state and local laws

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • previous retail or cashier experience is advantageous but not required
  • strong customer service skills
  • basic math skills for handling transactions
  • good communication skills including hearing and speech
  • manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • ability to learn and memorize product codes, pricing, and company policies
  • ability to stand or sit for long periods
  • ability to handle fast-paced environment and multiple tasks
  • familiarity with cash handling policies and procedures

Job Duties

  • welcome and engage customers
  • operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales to process customer orders
  • perform suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, food stamps, coupons, and refunds
  • maintain knowledge of current product location and pricing
  • keep check stand clean, stocked, and secure
  • stock, price, and rotate merchandise
  • supervise multi-station self-checkout lanes
  • assist customers at customer service counter
  • follow all state and federal laws concerning restricted item sales
  • adhere to USDA Food Stamp and WIC voucher procedures
  • monitor self-checkout area for transaction accuracy and safety hazards
  • initiate contact with customers during self-checkout transactions
  • respond promptly to self-checkout alerts and errors
  • assist customers and limit shrinkage during self-checkout
  • maintain high awareness of self-checkout area and customer needs
  • prioritize safety and report concerns according to company policy
