Job Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
- Ability to perform friendly, courteous and tactful relations with customers and co-workers
- Effective communication skills including hearing and speech
- Ability to complete written forms
- Capacity to conduct visual inspection and read merchandise information
- Ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently
- Ability to learn and memorize considerable information including PLU codes, product location and company policies
- Accuracy in scanning and verifying sales and handling monetary transactions
- Willingness to use blades for box cutting occasionally
- Ability to use household cleaners to maintain the work area
- Capability to manage potentially high stress situations including handling volatile or unsatisfied customers
- Compliance with state and local regulations such as food safety/handlers cards and tobacco/alcohol sales certification when applicable
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Prior retail or customer service experience favored but not required
- Strong communication skills with ability to handle customer interactions tactfully
- Basic math skills for handling transactions accurately
- Ability to memorize product codes and company policies
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Familiarity with operating cash registers and self-checkout systems is an advantage
Job Duties
- Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
- Maintains an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of the customer
- Operates check stand equipment such as a cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders using two aisles to check customers
- Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
- Processes monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, food stamps, coupons and refunds
- Maintains knowledge of current product location, monitors UPC codes and ensures proper pricing
- Maintains clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensures safe and secure work area
- Stocks, prices and rotates merchandise
- May be assigned to a multi-station self-checkout lane as needed
- May be assigned to the customer service counter as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed
- Follows all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted items such as tobacco, alcohol
- Adheres to all United States Department of Agriculture Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
- Regularly moves within SCO area to expedite transactions, maintain attentive presence and keep area clear of safety hazards
- Initiates and engages contact with customers as they process their transactions
- Responds to SCO stations to review, address and clear alerts or errors
- Monitors multiple simultaneous transactions and verifies payment in fast paced setting
- Engages with customers at self-checkout kiosks to assist, ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage
- Maintains a high level of awareness of the self-checkout area and customers
- Prioritizes safety by addressing or reporting concerns as per company policy
