Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire
  • Ability to successfully complete background check including criminal records check
  • Ability to pass physical and psychological exams if required
  • Ability to attend Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) programs as needed
  • Must obtain first-aid, CPR, AED, and bloodborne pathogens training within 1 year of hire
  • Must complete Clery Act training within 1 year of hire
  • Must complete supplemental security training through California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) and Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) within 1 year of hire
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including early mornings and nights
  • Commitment to professionalism and strong public service orientation
  • Physical endurance to walk and patrol outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with diverse campus populations
  • Must comply with California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act as a mandated reporter

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • College level coursework in criminal justice or code enforcement preferred
  • Three to six months related experience normally required
  • At least one year of full-time experience in police-related service such as communications, code or law enforcement, evidence collection, police or court records administration, animal control or related public contact activity preferred
  • Knowledge of defensive and de-escalation tactics
  • Knowledge of general procedures and regulations related to security and public safety
  • Ability to observe and recall details and incidents
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations
  • Physical ability to walk, stand, and patrol for extended periods in various weather conditions
  • Knowledge of and ability to learn to use applicable public safety related equipment and systems

Job Duties

  • Patrol assigned campus areas to safeguard students, faculty, staff, and property
  • Observe and report suspicious or criminal activity
  • Make private persons arrests when necessary
  • Assist in the enforcement of SDSU policies and regulations
  • Coordinate and conduct safety-related communication service training
  • Participate in community policing efforts
  • Serve as a visible campus resource
  • Assist with mental healthcare crisis interventions
  • Support planning and on-site coordination of safety for special events
  • Perform campus alarm testing
  • Respond to system alerts
  • Help ensure proper facility access and security
  • Provide support in areas such as traffic direction, lost and found property management, investigations assistance, and safety escort services
  • Open, close, and secure campus facilities as assigned
  • Interact daily with students, staff, faculty, law enforcement partners, and the public with discretion, tact, and professionalism
  • Independently assess and resolve problems using established protocols and sound judgment
