Job Requirements
- Be 21 years or older
- Have a valid driver’s license for at least three years
- Possess a driving record that meets Y standards with no more than two moving violations in the past three years, and no serious incidents such as reckless driving, DUI/DWI, or tickets 20+ miles above speed limit within last five years
- Pass a drug screening including for marijuana
- Be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Be comfortable traveling over varied terrain up to 15 miles per day
- Be willing to spend multiple days or weeks in wilderness settings
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills verbally and non-verbally
- Have current WFA and CPR certifications
- Have current Washington State Food Handlers Permit
- Hold Leave No Trace 101 Certification
- Be authorized to drive 14-passenger mini-buses safely on different road types
Job Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience working with teens in an organized setting including facilitating activities addressing adolescent issues
- Excellent judgment and decision-making skills
- Strong group facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills
- Knowledge of developmental needs of teens and ability to evaluate their needs individually
- Experience making the transference of wilderness experiences relevant to everyday lives of underserved youth
- Personal or professional experience in backpacking, rock climbing, paddling, and/or mountaineering
- Capability to hike and/or backpack over varied terrain and teach techniques for such terrain
- Experience and knowledge of basic backcountry equipment or techniques such as stove use, bear hangs, water purification, and/or shelter craft
- Experience and knowledge of reading maps and using them for navigation
- Ability to effectively manage physical risks including terrain, weather, and wildlife interactions
- Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR Certification
- Current Washington State Food Handlers Permit
- Leave No Trace 101 Certification
Job Duties
- Lead 5-15 day wilderness-based backpacking, paddling, rock climbing or mountaineering courses with emphasis on multicultural leadership
- Build strong rapport with participants and staff, foster positive group development, create structure, and draw learning from experiential activities
- Model cultural humility and celebrate diversity, effectively working with people of different identities, backgrounds, experiences, and abilities
- Ensure both a physically and emotionally safe and inclusive environment for youth and staff
- Transport participants in 14-passenger mini-buses to and from program areas
- Manage the unique risks of outdoor climbing and mountaineering programs
- Perform other duties as assigned
