Job Requirements

  • Open to members of AFSCME 109 Public Works-Solid Waste Addendum Bargaining Unit only
  • pass job-related tests and screenings
  • valid Washington State driver’s license
  • ability to obtain valid First Aid/CPR card within six months
  • satisfactorily complete certification on assigned equipment within six months
  • pass medical exam and physical abilities test
  • pass criminal background check
  • ability to work day shifts including weekends and holidays
  • ability to lift and carry objects over 50 pounds
  • ability to relocate work locations with little notice

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • good communication skills
  • ability to provide excellent customer service
  • ability to safely perform manual labor tasks
  • ability to operate various equipment after training
  • ability to follow oral and written directions
  • basic math skills
  • ability to work as part of a team
  • valid Washington State driver’s license
  • ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within six months

Job Duties

  • Provide excellent customer service to Solid Waste customers
  • perform manual labor tasks including sweeping, hosing, shoveling, lifting, and carrying heavy objects
  • learn to operate equipment such as backhoe, forklift, terminal tractor, and hydraulic compactor
  • direct incoming and departing vehicles at transfer stations or landfills
  • enforce safety rules and regulations
  • assist customers with unloading vehicles
  • maintain and service solid waste facility equipment
  • accurately log and input transaction information
  • operate yard goat/tractor and move loaded and unloaded trailers
  • drive pickup truck or light vehicle to pick up supplies and transport crews
  • identify and segregate hazardous waste and coordinate pickups
  • perform facility maintenance tasks such as mowing, watering lawns, raking leaves, cleaning culverts and drainage ditches
