  • able to read instructions, merchandise labels, order codes, numbers, reports, printed invoices and order forms

  • work and educational history demonstrating stability
  • basic reading and writing ability in English
  • able to read instructions, merchandise labels, order codes, numbers, reports, printed invoices and order forms
  • high school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • prior Bakery/Deli Department experience preferred
  • prior experience operating baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, knife, slicer, scales, cash register, steam table, wrapper, fryer and stove preferred
  • prior supervisory experience preferred

Job Duties

  • create an environment that enables customers to feel welcomed and appreciated by answering all questions regarding products sold in the department and throughout the store
  • initiate and/or make recommendations regarding the hiring, firing, discipline, promotion and evaluation of all Bakery/Deli Department personnel
  • orient and train all new Bakery/Deli Department employees and retrain employees when necessary
  • develop a weekly labor schedule for all Bakery/Deli Department employees for the approval of the store manager
  • accurately record customers’ order/requests for cakes and other bakery/deli items
  • implement the weekly display plan for display/table/case merchandising and ad promotion
  • order all bakery/deli products and supplies from authorized vendors to minimize out-of-stocks while maintaining desired turns
  • process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash register, scanner and scale
  • maintain the perishable department Communication Board with weekly updates and follow guidelines for Sampling Program and intercom announcements
  • adhere to all health regulations and codes instructing those supervised to comply
  • clean department floors, mirrors, containers, cooler, shelves, slicer, fryer, production area, equipment and cases
  • safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals
  • supervise/perform baking of product including breads, rolls, buns, cakes, pie, pastries and brownies
  • supervise/perform organization of cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise
  • verify merchandise against invoice
  • inspect delivery for shortages/damage and quality
  • sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code-date all case items
  • supervise/perform transportation of product to sales floor/cooler/freezer/preparation area
  • open cases, place merchandise in designated position/area
  • check product code/freshness date and rotate front row of each display
  • supervise/perform safety procedures used in operation of baler, case cutter, pallet jack, knife, intercom, pricing gun, slicer, fryer, ovens, proofer, steam table, stove, scales and wrapper
  • supervise/perform counting and recording of individual merchandise for inventory
  • compute retail price from cost, complete price changes, supervise price-marking/labeling of merchandise without UPC code
  • supervise/perform movement of damaged/unsalable/returnable products
  • communicate with store manager on problems, recommendations, effectiveness of plans and merchandising decisions
  • supervise/perform checking of case and cooler temperatures 4 times daily
  • supervise/perform preparation, display and packaging of all products in bakery/deli department
  • perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by store manager, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers
