Job Requirements
- Be physically able to perform the duties of an Aviation Safety Inspector safely and efficiently
- Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read typewritten characters without strain
- Possess the ability to hear conversational voice
- Not have any physical condition that poses a hazard to self or others or interferes with passenger flight experience
- Have at least one year of specialized federal service experience equivalent to the next lower grade level
- Have at least one year of pilot experience in multi-engine aircraft over 12,500 pounds maximum takeoff weight
- Meet professional flying skill standards by simulator check
- Hold appropriate pilot certification
- Log minimum required flight hours
- Have no more than two pilot-error-related accidents in the last five years
Job Qualifications
- Possess at least one year of specialized experience related to Parts 121 and 135 air carrier operations
- Demonstrate professional pilot skills validated by a simulator check to Airline Transport Pilot Standard
- Hold an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate or Commercial Pilot Certificate with instrument airplane rating
- Have a minimum of 1,500 total flight hours with at least 100 flight hours in the last three years
- Show no more than two pilot-error-related flying accidents in the past five years
- Exhibit ability to read printed materials with good distant vision (glasses/contact lenses permitted)
- Have the ability to hear conversational voice (hearing aid permitted)
Job Duties
- Apply expert knowledge of Title 14 CFR to develop and implement safety standards and programs
- Conduct inspections and surveillance of air carrier operations to ensure regulatory compliance
- Investigate enforcement cases, prepare detailed reports, and recommend appropriate actions
- Respond to and investigate public complaints, congressional inquiries, and aircraft incidents or accidents
- Provide technical assistance and coordination on Minimum Equipment List (MEL) approvals
- Collaborate with geographic inspectors and legal counsel in non-routine surveillance and enforcement activities
- Maintain comprehensive records of training, staffing, and operational procedures for assigned organizations
