Job Requirements
- Education beyond high school
- four to five years of relevant experience in forestry or related fields
- certified arborist designation or ability to obtain within six months
- knowledge of tree maintenance and pest management
- ability to operate arboricultural equipment safely
- strong communication skills
- physical ability to perform medium to heavy labor including lifting up to 50 pounds
- ability to work outdoors in various environmental conditions
- valid driver’s license
Job Qualifications
- Any combination of education beyond high school and four to five years of experience in forestry, urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or natural resource management
- designation as a Certified Arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) preferred or ability to obtain certification within six months of employment
- knowledge of modern arboriculture principles and practices
- ability to identify tree species and common pests
- experience with pest management and chemical application procedures
- strong communication skills both verbal and written
- skills in operating arboricultural tools, equipment, and machinery
- ability to plan and schedule job tasks effectively
- proficiency with computer software relevant to urban forestry
- demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders
Job Duties
- Performs arboriculture maintenance activities including pruning, cabling, fertilizing, and repairing trees and woody plants
- removes dead, diseased, or declining vegetation as necessary
- inspects and diagnoses potentially hazardous trees within city rights-of-way and public properties
- initiates work orders and safety reports
- identifies tree and plant health concerns such as diseases and infestations
- develops and administers pest management programs
- provides technical guidance and training on pesticide use and arboricultural procedures
- executes the city’s Urban Forestry Program including maintaining Tree City USA status and coordinating Arbor Day events
- coordinates tree management activities with Public Works
- collaborates with property owners and contractors to ensure compliance with city standards and ordinances
- maintains comprehensive inventory of trees using specialized software
- conducts site inspections and enforces tree protection ordinances
- provides arboricultural expertise to city departments
- supports general departmental maintenance operations
- documents and reports on Urban Forestry Program activities
- participates in outreach and educational efforts with community groups
- performs other duties as assigned by supervisors
