Job Requirements
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- four and one-half years of experience handling animals
- two years of enforcement experience with animal control laws
- demonstrated supervisory aptitude through leadership roles or supervisory training
- possession of a valid Hawai'i State driver license (Class 3) or comparable license at time of filing
- possession of a current CAETA Certificate of Completion prior to completing probation
- possession of a current American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Certificate prior to completing probation
- ability to meet physical and health standards necessary for job performance
- availability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
- ability to perform under exposure to hazardous and demanding conditions
Job Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- four and one-half years of experience handling animals
- two years of experience enforcing animal control laws
- demonstrated supervisory aptitude
- possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver license (Class 3) or comparable license
- ability to plan, assign, and supervise staff activities
- knowledge of laws and regulations related to animal care and control
- strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills
- ability to handle animals safely and humanely
- proficiency in report writing and record keeping
- ability to de-escalate tense situations and communicate effectively
- ability to work under hazardous conditions
- physical capability to perform job duties
- knowledge of CPR, AED, and first aid (certificates required prior to probation completion)
Job Duties
- Supervises, participates, and trains staff in response to complaints regarding stray, loose, animal cruelty and attacks
- investigates reports of animal attacks or animal cruelty
- supervises and participates in complex investigations involving dangerous and injured animals
- prepares reports and maintains accurate case files
- assigns and reviews the work of subordinates
- prepares performance evaluations and counsels staff
- conducts patrols and humanely captures stray or injured animals
- produces and maintains case files and work records
- provides information on laws and regulations to the public
- participates in community outreach and education about responsible pet ownership
- keeps up to date on animal control laws and regulations
- appears in court for testimony when required
- safely and humanely euthanizes animals in compliance with policies
- recommends personnel actions including hiring and disciplinary measures
- assists with procedure development and revision
- participates in agency and community meetings
- inspects and maintains equipment and vehicles
- safely operates a vehicle for work-related travel
- performs other related duties as assigned
