The City of Lakeland, FL, operates the Lakeland Linder International Airport and is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional for the position of Airfield Operations Specialist. Job Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • must maintain a valid telephone number
  • must pass a ten-year fingerprint-based criminal history records check (CHRC) and security threat assessment (STA) ongoing
  • may be required to pass an elevated background check provided by the City of Lakeland Police Department upon hire

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Aviation Management, Business Administration, or related field
  • one (1) year of training and experience in airport operations at an airport certified under FAR Part 139
  • knowledge of federal rules and regulations for airport operations, design, and construction
  • knowledge of aircraft types and performance characteristics
  • knowledge of airfield communications procedures, navigational aids, and meteorological phenomena
  • ability to obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under the FAA's Small UAS Rule, FAR Part 107
  • ability to coordinate the work of contractors and consultants
  • ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and written
  • ability to write reports and provide documented recommendations
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with airport users, tenants, contractors, governmental agencies, and the public
  • skilled in using computer-based applications including but not limited to the operation of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other typical software applications used in an office environment

Job Duties

  • Assigns and directs the work activities of subordinates to include scheduling
  • conducts FAR Part 139 airfield inspections
  • assesses airfield conditions for safe aircraft operations, records discrepancies, issues airport NOTAMs, and generates work orders as required
  • conducts inspections of airport facilities ensuring satisfactory levels of service, repair, and maintenance, generating work orders as may be required
  • conducts wildlife management following the airport's approved Wildlife Hazard Management Plan
  • assumes responsibility for coordinating appropriate actions in response to emergencies and other airport incidents per the airport's approved Airport Emergency Plan
  • conducts and ensures compliance with airfield drivers training, security training, emergency training, airport familiarization training, and other training as required by local, State, and Federal regulations, including but not limited to FAR Part 139
  • conducts screening of applicants for security credentials following the airport's approved Airport Security Plan
  • assists in developing distribution, control, accountability, and verification procedures of airport access systems
  • assists with maintaining the airport's noise mitigation program(s), responding to and logging public comments/complaints, investigating aircraft noise events, and referring noise issues as appropriate to other airport personnel
  • provides and coordinates escorts for contractors and vendors needing access to airport facilities
  • acts as liaison between the airport and other private and governmental entities as necessary
  • responds to questions and inquiries from the public, airport tenants and users, airlines, and governmental agencies
  • resolves complaints or refers matters as appropriate to other airport personnel communicating with tenants and users regarding grievances, performance deficiencies, and other operational issues
  • ensures compliance with all federal regulations on airport operations, safety, certification, and security, including monitoring and evaluating daily activities of airside and landside operations
  • revises and updates airport primary guiding documents to ensure compliance with local, State, and Federal regulations, including but not limited to FAR Part 139
  • required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the airport
  • researches and compiles data as the basis for reports and recommendations, analyzing specific operational areas as assigned and providing recommendations and assistance with proposed solutions and/or alternate methods or procedures
  • ability to work a rotating shift and rotating on-call schedule and be available for response to after-hour emergencies
  • position is designated as Emergency and Essential and Mission Critical
