Job Requirements
- Meet minimum flight hours including 1,200 total hours for GS-09 and 1,500 total hours for GS-11 and GS-12
- Possess FAA Airplane Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with appropriate ratings
- Hold current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
- Provide complete and legible flight logs for verification
- Be under age 40 or request waiver if veteran preference eligible
- Meet selective placement factors related to firefighting retirement
- Obtain and maintain Certified Flight Instructor Certificate for GS-12 positions as required
- Meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by application closing date
Job Qualifications
- FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Multi-Engine Land ratings or FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with equivalent ratings
- Current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
- Verified flight hours meeting minimum requirements by grade level including Pilot-in-Command time, multi-engine, night, and instrument flying
- Ability to provide complete and verifiable flight logs
- Strong knowledge of flight operations and regulations
- Ability to work in high-pressure and emergency scenarios
- Excellent communication and coordination skills
Job Duties
- Operate multi-engine airplanes for missions such as wildfire suppression and personnel transport
- Maintain compliance with FAA regulations and flight safety standards
- Submit and maintain detailed and accurate flight logs
- Navigate diverse and challenging flight conditions using instrument and visual flying skills
- Coordinate with ground teams and emergency personnel during firefighting and rescue operations
- Obtain and keep current FAA certifications and medical certificates as required
- Potentially instruct other pilots if certified as a flight instructor
