Job Requirements

  • Possess an FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land ratings or FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land rating
  • Hold a current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
  • Meet minimum total flight hour requirements based on GS level including PIC, multi-engine, night, and instrument hours
  • Provide complete, legible, and verifiable flight logs bearing the applicant’s name
  • Meet age criteria under primary firefighter retirement coverage or obtain waiver if eligible
  • Submit updated required documents by closing date
  • Demonstrate ability to perform duties in multi-engine airplane category under diverse flight conditions

Job Qualifications

  • FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land ratings or FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land rating
  • Current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
  • Minimum flight experience as specified for GS-09, GS-11, and GS-12 levels including total flight hours, pilot-in-command hours, multi-engine, night, and instrument flight time
  • Ability to provide complete and legible flight logs
  • Eligibility under federal firefighter retirement provisions
  • Demonstrated ability to operate safely and competently under demanding conditions

Job Duties

  • Operate multi-engine airplanes in support of forest management and firefighting missions
  • Ensure adherence to FAA and agency aviation regulations during all flight operations
  • Maintain accurate and verifiable flight logs documenting flight hours, conditions, and pilot-in-command status
  • Perform day, night, and instrument flight operations in varying weather and terrain conditions
  • Conduct pre-flight inspections and safety checks on aircraft and related equipment
  • Communicate effectively with air traffic control, ground personnel, and Forest Service management
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification maintenance including potential flight instructor responsibilities
