Job Requirements

  • Must possess an FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land ratings or FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with the stated ratings
  • Must hold a current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
  • Minimum of 1,200 flight hours including 250 as Pilot-In-Command (GS-09)
  • Minimum of 1,500 flight hours including 250 as Pilot-In-Command for GS-11 and GS-12
  • Documented flight logs verifying experience
  • Meet age requirements linked to firefighter retirement coverage
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Certified Flight Instructor Certificate if required for GS-12
  • Must provide updated required documents by closing date
  • Must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by submission date

Job Qualifications

  • FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Multi-Engine Land ratings or FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with same ratings
  • Current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
  • Proven flight experience as Pilot-In-Command including specified hours in multi-engine airplanes, night flying, and instrument time
  • Ability to maintain or obtain Certified Flight Instructor Certificate (for GS-12 level positions)
  • Strong knowledge of FAA regulations and safety protocols
  • Experience in operating aircraft under challenging conditions such as wildland firefighting
  • Ability to work as part of a team in high-pressure operational environments

Job Duties

  • Operate multi-engine airplanes for wildfire suppression and forest management support
  • Conduct aerial firefighting missions including water and retardant drops
  • Transport personnel, equipment, and supplies to remote locations
  • Perform search and rescue and emergency medical evacuation flights
  • Maintain compliance with FAA regulations and Forest Service aviation policies
  • Ensure safety and operational readiness of assigned aircraft
  • Maintain detailed and accurate flight logs to verify experience and compliance
