Job Requirements

  • must possess a commercial pilot certificate or airline transport pilot certificate or military equivalent
  • must hold multi-engine land and instrument ratings
  • must have a current first or second-class FAA medical certificate
  • meet total flight time requirements based on grade level
  • demonstrate pilot-in-command hours
  • satisfy night flying and instrument flying hour requirements
  • specialized experience with fire aviation operations
  • ability to work under adverse weather and hazardous conditions
  • capability to travel extensively and work long hours
  • maintain physical fitness to meet FAA medical standards

Job Qualifications

  • current commercial pilot certificate or an FAA airline transport pilot certificate or military equivalent rating
  • multi-engine land and instrument rating
  • possession of first or second-class FAA medical certificate
  • total flight time of at least 1200 hours for GS-9 level
  • pilot-in-command experience of at least 250 hours
  • night flying experience of at least 50 hours
  • recent flying experience with a minimum of 100 hours in the last 12 months
  • instrument flying experience of at least 50 hours
  • multi-engine airplane flying time of at least 100 hours
  • specialized experience in fire aviation or related flight operations as specified for GS-9, GS-11, or GS-12 levels

Job Duties

  • fly multi-engine airplanes in various fire suppression and survey missions
  • perform low-level and night flying operations under challenging weather and terrain conditions
  • coordinate airspace and manage air traffic during fire incidents
  • participate as a team member in Smokejumper operations including aerial deployment of personnel and cargo
  • ensure compliance with federal aviation and safety regulations
  • maintain detailed records and reports related to flight operations
  • provide expertise and guidance on fire aviation standards and interagency coordination
