Job Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level
  • Possession or obtainment of valid ATC Certificate and/or Control Tower Operator Certificate as appropriate
  • Meet federal time-in-grade requirements if applying through merit promotion
  • Capacity to perform essential job functions without risk as determined by pre-employment medical evaluations
  • Must not exceed maximum entry age of 36 unless waiver obtained
  • Must comply with special retirement coverage for Air Traffic Controllers
  • Obtain required facility ratings within applicable time limits
  • Ability to work in high-risk, restricted airspace environment with live munitions and special flight maneuvers

Job Qualifications

  • Experience equivalent to GS-11 level in air traffic control involving issuing control instructions and advice close to airport vicinities
  • Ability to act decisively under stressful conditions and maintain alertness
  • Skilled in coordinating plans and actions with pilots and controllers
  • Knowledge of Terminal Air Traffic Control procedures including tower and radar procedures
  • Knowledge of radar surveillance, precision systems, and weather phenomena related to Military Radar Unit coordination
  • Knowledge of range procedures, weapons testing, and range safety
  • Ability to communicate rapidly, clearly, and distinctly both orally and in writing
  • Capability to provide appropriate emergency reporting and take decisive actions

Job Duties

  • Provide mission support services using radar and air-to-ground communications within Restricted Area R-2515
  • Issue control instructions and advice to pilots to maintain proper separation and expedite safe aircraft movement
  • Coordinate plans and actions with pilots and other controllers to ensure mission success
  • Make rapid and precise judgments in real-time under stressful conditions
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including in emergency situations
  • Monitor and manage air traffic through special use areas including spin areas, supersonic corridors, and precision impact ranges
  • Maintain situational awareness of all aircraft within area of responsibility regardless of altitude or clearance type
