Job Requirements

  • Meet specialized experience requirements for GS-11 level
  • Possess or obtain valid Air Traffic Control Specialist Certificate
  • Obtain Control Tower Operator Certificate if appropriate
  • Pass pre-employment physical and medical evaluations
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods and climb stairs
  • Meet maximum entry age of 36 with appointments completed before 36th birthday
  • Not be a member of the Ready Reserve
  • Comply with Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program conditions

Job Qualifications

  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-10 level or equivalent
  • Comprehensive knowledge of air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to act decisively under stress and maintain alertness
  • Skill to coordinate plans and actions with pilots and other controllers
  • Judgment to select safest and most effective course of action
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to pass initial and periodic drug testing

Job Duties

  • Issue control instructions and advice to pilots to assure proper separation of aircraft
  • Expedite safe and efficient movement of air traffic
  • Monitor air traffic and use radar and other equipment to track aircraft
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations
  • Coordinate activities with other air traffic controllers and airport personnel
  • Maintain communication with pilots regarding weather and air traffic conditions
  • Comply with all applicable air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations
