Job Requirements

  • must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing
  • ability to sit and/or stand for long periods while controlling aircraft
  • ability to climb several flights of stairs to reach control tower cab
  • possession or ability to obtain air traffic control specialist certificate
  • ability to meet the age requirements including maximum entry age of 36 and mandatory separation age of 56
  • ability to pass appropriate pre-employment physical/medical evaluations
  • compliance with special retirement provisions applicable to air traffic controllers
  • meet time-in-grade requirement of one year at gs-10 level
  • removal from Ready Reserve and no membership allowed in Ready Reserve

Job Qualifications

  • at least one year of specialized experience at the gs-10 level or equivalent
  • comprehensive knowledge of air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations
  • knowledge of terminal air traffic control procedures including tower procedures
  • knowledge of the operational limitations of air traffic control equipment and related systems
  • ability to make rapid and precise judgments in real-time work situations
  • effective oral and written communication skills
  • ability to act decisively in emergency situations

Job Duties

  • issue control instructions and advice to pilots in the vicinity of airports to assure proper separation of aircraft and expedite safe and efficient movement
  • maintain alertness and act decisively under stressful situations
  • coordinate plans and actions with pilots and other controllers
  • select and take the safest and most effective course of action from available choices
  • comply with air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations
  • operate and monitor air traffic control equipment and related systems
  • communicate effectively orally and in writing, especially in emergency situations
