Job Requirements
- U.S. citizenship required
- males must be registered for Selective Service
- must possess valid air traffic controller certification and maintain currency
- able to obtain and maintain security clearance
- may work uncommon tours, rotating shifts, overtime
- able to respond to short notice recall for emergencies
- required to complete all training within prescribed limits for full facility rating
- subject to DoD Priority Placement Program
- ability to meet physical, mental, and medical standards for ATC duties
- at least 5 years of ATC tower controller experience highly desired
- 10 years ATC experience within last 3 years highly desired
- may work under adverse conditions
- must complete limited weather observer certification
- subject to drug testing as per Air Force guidelines
- must meet age restrictions with special rules for re-entry
- must hold or obtain Air Traffic Control Specialist Certificate and/or Control Tower Operator Certificate
- complete appropriate medical evaluations

Job Qualifications
- This position may be entitled to 5 percent premium pay as authorized by 5 USC 5546a (a)(1)
- position is designated as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) requiring successful completion of initial and periodic drug testing
- duties qualify as category 4 designation under national emergency provisions
- subject to special retirement provisions for Air Traffic Controllers under CSRS and FERS
- incumbents must meet physical requirements including ability to sit or stand for long periods and climb stairs
- must meet Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualification standards GS-2152
- specialized experience includes knowledge of air traffic control laws, procedures, and ability to make rapid judgments in real-time situations
- knowledge of terminal air traffic control procedures and equipment
- ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing
- ability to act decisively in emergencies
- knowledge of weather phenomena and operational equipment
- maximum entry age is 36 years with exceptions for re-entry or waiver
- specialized experience of at least one year at GS-10 level or equivalent required
- time-in-grade requirements applicable for merit promotion applicants
- knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs) include laws, rules, regulations governing air traffic
- knowledge of ATC equipment, lighting, navigational aids and weather
- ability to coordinate multiple processes and adjust quickly to traffic changes
Job Duties
- Controls military and civilian aircraft under visual flight rules (VFR) in a control tower environment
- observes and reports airport advisories, critical weather information, and equipment outages
- provides instruction and assistance to air traffic control personnel
- maintains certification requirements
