Job Requirements
- Hold a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO)
- Have a current Class II Medical Certificate
- Subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements (pre-employment, random, reasonable cause/suspicion, post-accident)
- Have held a CTO with a facility rating or FAA Credential with tower rating for at least six months
- Ability to work under general supervision and perform duties independently
- Ability to make critical decisions related to aircraft movement and separation
- Maintain current certifications and meet health standards
Job Qualifications
- Hold a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO) with a facility rating
- Possess an FAA Credential with tower rating held for a minimum of six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Understand FAA procedures and regulations related to air traffic control
- Proficient in communication and coordination with pilots and other controllers
- Ability to operate air traffic control equipment and navigational aids
- Skilled in preplanning and sequencing air traffic
- Strong decision-making and situational awareness skills
- Good physical health to meet medical certification requirements
Job Duties
- Make decisions involving the order of departures to assure equitable treatment of all aircraft
- Make decisions on times and direction of takeoff and turns necessary for departure
- Decide whether inbound aircraft are to land immediately or circle and manage distances for safe arrival sequencing
- Manage active runways and possible simultaneous use of other runways
- Determine methods to intersperse arrivals and departures with minimal delay
- Clear landing and departing aircraft to assure standard separation on runways
- Sequence arriving traffic before entering traffic patterns for safe final approach
- Apply IFR separation standards around the airport to provide initial separation between IFR arrivals and departures
- Sequence VFR and IFR traffic using radar equipment and separating IFR traffic when delegated
- Authorize VFR flights through the airport traffic area
- Determine the usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids
- Monitor navigational aids and control panels including BRITE displays
- Instruct pilots to change radio frequencies and radar beacon codes
- Coordinate with other controllers on arrival and departure movements
- Preplan traffic sequencing and separation over a radius of 5 miles or more
- Set up checkpoints to maintain necessary traffic separation
- Maintain a continuous mental picture and evaluation of traffic
- Maintain continuous radio watch with aircraft
- Handle IFR traffic responsibilities at the airport
- Study weather reports and forecasts, obtain weather certification, observe weather and record pilot reports
- Provide weather and field condition information to aircraft
- Operate light guns, runway lights, field lighting, jet barriers
- Orient pilots lost or in difficulty
- Communicate with airport operations, management, and emergency services
- Perform lower grade duties as necessary
- Provide on-the-job training (OJT) to others
