Job Description

This position is with an air traffic control facility operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) within an Air Traffic Control Tower. The establishment is committed to maintaining the highest safety standards while managing the orderly and timely flow of air traffic at the controlled airport. The facility works under the guidance of a Tower Manager but requires incumbents to perform duties with significant autonomy, especially once trained and experienced. Job Requirements

  • Have a Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate
  • Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements including pre-employment, random, reasonable cause/suspicion, and post-accident
  • Minimum six months experience holding a CTO certificate with a facility rating or an FAA credential with a tower rating in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain situational awareness under pressure
  • Willingness to perform duties independently under general supervision

Job Qualifications

  • Hold a valid Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate with a facility rating or an FAA Credential with a tower rating
  • Have a minimum of six months experience in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) procedures
  • Ability to operate aviation communication and navigational equipment
  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to manage complex traffic scenarios
  • Good communication and coordination skills with pilots and other air traffic controllers

Job Duties

  • Make decisions regarding the order of departures to ensure equitable treatment and compliance with IFR clearances
  • Determine times and directions for takeoff and any necessary altitude or course changes
  • Decide whether inbound aircraft land immediately or circle and adjust distances for arrival sequencing
  • Select active runways and coordinate simultaneous use of other runways
  • Manage timings and methods that intersperse arrivals and departures minimizing delays
  • Ensure clearance for landing and departing aircraft to maintain standard runway separation
  • Sequence arriving traffic to maintain safe, orderly flow on final approach
  • Apply IFR separation standards delegated by approach control or center in areas around the airport
  • Determine usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids including monitoring BRITE displays
  • Instruct pilots on radio frequency and radar beacon code changes
  • Coordinate with other controllers on movements of arriving and departing aircraft
  • Preplan traffic sequencing and separation over a radius of 5 miles or more when traffic conditions warrant
  • Set up check points to maintain traffic separation
  • Maintain a continuous mental map and evaluation of the traffic complex
  • Maintain radio communications with previously contacted aircraft
  • Handle IFR traffic responsibilities at the airport
  • Study weather reports, obtain certification, observe weather and record pilot weather reports
  • Provide weather and field condition information to aircraft
  • Forward weather information and pilot reports to appropriate agencies
  • Operate light guns, runway and field lighting, and jet barriers
  • Orient lost or distressed pilots and coordinate with operational and emergency services
  • Perform lower grade level duties as necessary for operational needs and proficiency maintenance
  • Provide on-the-job training to others
