Job Description

Job Requirements

  • Have a Control Tower Operator Certificate
  • Hold a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Subject to drug and or alcohol testing per DOT FAA requirements including pre-employment, random, reasonable cause suspicion, post-accident
  • Minimum six months experience holding a Control Tower Operator Certificate or FAA Credential with tower rating in an Air Traffic Control Tower

Job Qualifications

  • Possession of a Control Tower Operator Certificate
  • Current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Experience holding a Control Tower Operator Certificate or FAA Credential with tower rating for a minimum of six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Proficiency with navigational aids and radar equipment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to make decisive and rapid decisions under pressure
  • Understanding of IFR and VFR traffic control procedures
  • Knowledge of weather report analysis
  • Capability to perform safety and emergency procedures
  • Ability to train and guide junior staff

Job Duties

  • Make decisions involving the order of departures to assure equitable treatment of aircraft
  • Determine times and direction of takeoff and any turns necessary for departure
  • Decide whether inbound aircraft are to land immediately or circle and manage distances to control arrival
  • Select the active runway and possible simultaneous use of other runways
  • Manage the time and methods by which arrivals and departures are interspersed to minimize delays
  • Ensure landing and departing aircraft are cleared to use runways meeting separation standards
  • Sequence arriving traffic before entry into traffic patterns to assure safe flow on final approach
  • Apply IFR separation standards as delegated by approach control
  • Use radar equipment to sequence VFR and IFR traffic and separate IFR traffic when delegated
  • Authorize VFR flights through airport traffic area
  • Coordinate with other controllers on arrival and departure movements
  • Preplan traffic sequencing and separation in non-approach terminals
  • Set up checkpoints to maintain traffic separation
  • Maintain continuous mental picture and evaluation of traffic
  • Maintain continuous radio watch with previously contacted aircraft
  • Handle IFR traffic at assigned airport
  • Study weather reports and forecasts and observe weather conditions impacting traffic
  • Furnish aircraft with field conditions, altimeter settings, weather info, navigational aid status, and aircraft malfunctioning reports
  • Operate light guns, runway lights, field lighting, jet barriers
  • Orient pilots lost or in difficulty and coordinate with operations and emergency services
  • Perform lower grade duties for proficiency
  • Provide on-the-job training to others
