Job Requirements

  • Have a Control Tower Operator Certificate
  • Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Comply with DOT/FAA drug and/or alcohol testing requirements
  • Have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or FAA Credential with tower rating for at least six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Be able to work under the supervision of a Tower Manager independently
  • Maintain the ability to make critical decisions on traffic sequencing and safety
  • Be available for work that may include irregular hours
  • Maintain certification and training proficiency
  • Follow FAA safety protocols and operational guidelines

Job Qualifications

  • Hold a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or FAA Credential with tower rating
  • Have a minimum of six months experience in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Understand FAA regulations and procedures for VFR and IFR traffic
  • Demonstrate strong decision-making and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain situational awareness and mental picture of traffic
  • Skilled in operating ATC equipment and communication devices
  • Capability to respond effectively in high-pressure environments
  • Experience providing training or mentorship to new controllers

Job Duties

  • Make decisions involving the order of departures to assure equitable treatment and compliance with center or approach control clearances
  • Determine the times and direction of takeoff and any necessary turns for departure
  • Decide whether inbound aircraft are to land immediately or circle and control arrival distances
  • Select the active runway and possible simultaneous use of other runways
  • Manage the time and methods for interspersing arrivals and departures with minimal delay
  • Clear landing and departing aircraft to assure standard separation on runways
  • Sequence arriving traffic to assure a safe, orderly flow on final approach
  • Apply IFR separation standards as delegated
  • Use radar equipment to sequence and separate IFR and VFR traffic
  • Authorize VFR flights through the airport traffic area
  • Determine usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids
  • Monitor control panels including BRITE display
  • Instruct pilots to change radio frequencies or radar beacon codes
  • Coordinate with other controllers on movements of arrival and departure aircraft
  • Preplan traffic sequencing and separation over extended areas
  • Set up check points to ensure traffic separation
  • Maintain mental picture and evaluation of changing traffic
  • Maintain continuous radio watch with contacted aircraft
  • Handle IFR traffic responsibilities
  • Study weather reports and forecasts
  • Obtain weather certifications
  • Observe weather and record pilot reports
  • Provide aircraft with field conditions and navigational aid status
  • Forward weather and malfunction reports
  • Operate light guns, runway lights, field lighting, and jet barriers
  • Orient lost or distressed pilots
  • Determine when to alert operations and emergency services
  • Perform lower grade duties as needed
  • Provide on-the-job training to others
