Job Requirements

  • Individual must have a CTO certificate and a current class II medical certificate
  • Position is subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements
  • Individual must have held a control tower operator certificate (CTO) with a facility rating or FAA credential with a tower rating
  • Minimum of six months experience in an air traffic control tower
  • Ability to perform duties independently under general supervision
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to manage stressful situations and multitask efficiently

Job Qualifications

  • Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or FAA credential with tower rating
  • Minimum of six months experience in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Ability to make quick decisions and concentrate under pressure
  • Knowledge of air traffic control procedures and regulations
  • Effective communication and coordination skills
  • Ability to monitor multiple inputs and maintain situational awareness
  • Proficiency in using navigation aids and communication systems
  • Capability to train others in operational procedures

Job Duties

  • Making decisions involving the order of departures to assure equitable treatment and compliance with clearances
  • Deciding times and directions of takeoff and necessary turns for departure
  • Determining whether inbound aircraft land immediately or circle and whether distances are lengthened to control arrival
  • Managing active runway usage and possible simultaneous use of other runways
  • Coordinating the time and methods for interspersing arrivals and departures with minimal delay
  • Clearing landing and departing aircraft to assure standard runway separation
  • Sequencing arriving traffic for safe, orderly flow on final approach
  • Applying IFR separation standards as delegated
  • Using radar and delegated authority to sequence VFR and IFR traffic
  • Authorizing VFR flights through airport traffic area
  • Monitoring usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids
  • Coordinating aircraft movements with other controllers
  • Preplanning traffic sequencing and separation within a 5-mile radius
  • Setting up check points for traffic separation
  • Maintaining continuous mental picture and evaluation of complex traffic
  • Maintaining radio watch with contacted aircraft
  • Handling IFR traffic responsibilities
  • Studying and reporting weather conditions and forecasts
  • Communicating weather and operational information to pilots
  • Operating light guns and airport lighting systems
  • Assisting lost or distressed pilots
  • Performing lower grade duties as required
  • Providing on-the-job training to others
