Job Requirements
- Have a Control Tower Operator Certificate
- Hold a current Class II Medical Certificate
- Be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements
- Have a minimum of six months experience holding a CTO Certificate or FAA Credential with a tower rating in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Ability to perform duties independently under general supervision

- Knowledge of Visual Flight Rules procedures
- Strong decision-making abilities in high-pressure conditions
- Ability to coordinate with multiple agencies and teams
- Proven proficiency in monitoring and operating air traffic control equipment
- Understanding of weather impact on air traffic control
- Ability to train and mentor other operators
- Excellent communication and coordination skills
- Capable of maintaining composure and situational awareness
Job Duties
- Make decisions involving the order of departures to assure equitable treatment and compliance with IFR clearances
- Decide times and direction of takeoff and necessary turns for departure
- Determine whether inbound aircraft land immediately or circle and manage distances to control arrival points
- Select active runways and simultaneous use possibilities
- Manage the interspersing of arrivals and departures to minimize delays
- Clear aircraft for runway use ensuring standard separation
- Sequence arriving traffic to maintain a safe and orderly flow on final approach
- Apply IFR separation standards as delegated by approach control or center
- Use radar equipment and coordinate IFR and VFR traffic sequencing
- Authorize VFR flights through the traffic area when applicable
- Monitor usability of communications frequencies and navigational aids
- Instruct pilots on frequency and beacon code changes
- Coordinate with other controllers on aircraft movements
- Preplan traffic sequencing and separation in a 5-mile or greater radius when warranted
- Set up checkpoints to ensure traffic separation
- Maintain mental evaluation of traffic complex
- Keep continuous radio watch with contacted aircraft
- Accept responsibility for handling IFR traffic at the airport
- Study weather reports and forecasts
- Obtain weather certifications and observe weather for traffic impact
- Provide aircraft with field conditions, altimeter settings, and weather updates
- Operate light guns, runway lights, and field lighting
- Orient pilots who are lost or in difficulty and coordinate with emergency services
- Perform lower grade level duties for proficiency and operational requirements
- Provide on-the-job training to others
