Job Requirements

  • Must have a current Control Tower Operator Certificate
  • Must hold a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements
  • Must have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or FAA tower credential for at least six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Ability to work under general supervision and independently
  • Willingness to perform shift work as required
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with pilots and other controllers

Job Qualifications

  • Possession of a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a valid facility rating
  • Experience holding an FAA Credential with a tower rating for a minimum of six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Ability to work under general supervision and perform duties independently
  • Strong decision-making skills in high-pressure environments
  • Proficiency in using communication and radar equipment
  • Knowledge of air traffic control procedures and Federal Aviation Administration regulations
  • Strong coordination and communication skills
  • Ability to interpret weather reports and make operational decisions accordingly

Job Duties

  • Makes decisions about departure order to ensure equitable treatment and compliance with IFR clearances
  • Determines times and directions for takeoff and necessary departure turns
  • Controls whether inbound aircraft land immediately or circle and manages arrival distance to control timing
  • Selects active runways and coordinates possible simultaneous use
  • Plans timing and methods for interspersing arrivals and departures with minimal delay
  • Clears aircraft for runway use ensuring standard separation
  • Manages arriving traffic sequencing to maintain safe and orderly flow
  • Applies IFR separation standards for arrivals and departures in designated areas
  • Uses radar equipment to separate IFR and VFR traffic when delegated
  • Authorizes VFR flights through the airport traffic area
  • Monitors communication frequencies and navigational aids for usability
  • Instructs pilots to change radio frequencies and radar beacon codes
  • Coordinates with other controllers on arrival and departure movements
  • Preplans traffic sequencing and separation over a radius of 5 miles or more when required
  • Maintains a mental picture of the traffic complex and continuous radio watch
  • Accepts responsibility for handling IFR traffic at the airport
  • Studies weather reports and forecasts and adjusts operations accordingly
  • Provides pilots with vital information about field conditions, weather, altimeter settings, and navigational aid status
  • Operates light guns, runway lights, field lighting, and jet barriers
  • Assists pilots who are lost or in difficulty
  • Coordinates with operations offices, airport management, and emergency services
  • Performs lower grade duties as necessary
  • Provides on-the-job training to other personnel
