Job Requirements
- Have a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO)
- Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate
- Pass drug and alcohol testing according to DOT/FAA rules
- Hold a tower rating or FAA Credential with tower rating for at least six months
- Ability to work under general supervision and independently perform duties
- Comply with all operational, safety, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain fitness standards required for air traffic control duties
- Have clear communication skills and proficiency in radio operation
Job Qualifications
- Hold a current Control Tower Operator Certificate
- Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate
- Minimum of six months experience with a tower rating in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Knowledge of FAA air traffic control procedures and regulations
- Proficient in use of radar, radio communications, and navigational aids
- Ability to make quick, decisive safety-related decisions
- Strong communication and coordination skills
- Ability to maintain situational awareness and manage multiple simultaneous tasks
- Capable of performing under pressure and maintaining composure during emergencies
- Experience in training or mentoring junior staff
Job Duties
- Manage the order of departures to assure equitable treatment and compliance with IFR flight clearances
- Determine times and directions for takeoffs and necessary departure turns
- Decide whether inbound aircraft land immediately or circle and manage aircraft approach patterns
- Select active runways and coordinate simultaneous use of others
- Manage timing and methods to intersperse arrivals and departures minimizing delays
- Clear landing and departing aircraft for runway use ensuring standard separation
- Sequence arriving traffic to assure safe, orderly final approach flow
- Apply IFR separation standards between arrivals, departures, and successive departures
- Sequence VFR and IFR traffic using radar and when delegated separate IFR traffic
- Authorize VFR flights through the airport traffic area
- Determine usability of communications and navigational aids
- Monitor navigational aids and control panel systems
- Instruct pilots to change radio frequencies and radar codes
- Coordinate aircraft movements with other controllers
- Preplan traffic sequencing and separation over a radius of 5 miles or more
- Set up checkpoints to ensure traffic separation
- Maintain mental picture and evaluation of traffic complex
- Maintain continuous radio watch
- Handle IFR traffic responsibilities
- Study weather reports and forecasts
- Obtain weather certifications
- Observe and record pilot weather reports
- Provide aircraft with weather and field condition information
- Operate light and runway lighting systems
- Orient pilots in distress and coordinate with emergency services
- Perform lower grade operating duties as needed
- Provide on-the-job training to junior controllers
