Job Requirements

  • Hold a CTO certificate
  • Have a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Subject to drug and or alcohol testing per DOT and FAA requirements including pre-employment, random, reasonable cause, suspicion, post-accident
  • Have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or FAA credential with tower rating for a minimum of six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower

Job Qualifications

  • Hold a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or FAA credential with tower rating
  • Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Minimum of six months experience in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Ability to make timely and critical decisions
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations and air traffic control procedures
  • Ability to maintain situational awareness and multitask under pressure
  • Experience with air traffic control technology and navigational aids
  • Capable of conducting on-the-job training

Job Duties

  • Make decisions involving the order of departures ensuring equitable treatment and compliance with center or approach control clearances
  • Determine times and directions of takeoff and necessary turns for departures
  • Decide whether inbound aircraft land immediately or circle and manage spacing
  • Select active runways and coordinate simultaneous use of other runways
  • Manage arrival and departure interspersing to minimize traffic delays
  • Clear landing and departing aircraft to assure standard separation
  • Sequence arriving traffic to ensure a safe flow on final approach
  • Apply IFR separation standards in limited airport areas
  • Determine usability of communications frequencies and navigational aids
  • Monitor navigational aids and control panels including BRITE display
  • Instruct pilots to change radio frequencies and radar beacon codes
  • Coordinate with other controllers on arrival and departure movements
  • Preplan traffic sequencing and separation in non-approach terminals
  • Set up checkpoints to maintain traffic separation
  • Maintain continuous mental picture and evaluation of changing traffic
  • Maintain continuous radio watch with contacted aircraft
  • Handle IFR traffic responsibility
  • Study weather reports and forecasts and obtain weather certifications
  • Provide weather and operational information to aircraft
  • Operate light guns, runway lights, and field lighting
  • Orient pilots lost or in difficulty
  • Coordinate with operations offices and emergency services
  • Perform lower grade duties as necessary
  • Provide on-the-job training to others
