Job Requirements

  • Two years of professional experience in fire and aviation management operations
  • valid County of San Diego Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) Certificate required within one year of hire
  • valid California Class C Driver License at time of hire
  • residence in the San Diego County area highly desirable
  • eligibility for additional pay based on assignment and certification
  • ability to pass pre-employment screenings including medical review, drug and alcohol testing, background check, and fingerprinting

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of professional experience in fire and aviation management operations
  • experience in participation or supervision of multi-faceted aviation programs
  • knowledge of mobilization and dispatch, equipment development and deployment, training, logistics, fire communications systems, and fire suppression and preparedness
  • ability to develop and deliver aviation training curriculum
  • possession of relevant National Wildfire Coordinating Group certifications highly desirable
  • possession of a valid commercial pilot helicopter license highly desirable
  • experience in managing interagency fire helicopter operations
  • experience with contract aircraft operation and maintenance
  • experience with rescue hoist operations and night-flying operations management
  • strong leadership and coordination skills
  • familiarity with aviation-related regulatory requirements

Job Duties

  • Plan, coordinate and supervise personnel and the overall operation of aerial firefighting, rescue, and EMS program
  • direct and coordinate the proper movement, use, and servicing of helicopters
  • coordinate logistics of aerial firefighting and rescue techniques
  • research and evaluate equipment
  • prepare and manage helicopter maintenance contracts
  • provide training to flight and ground support personnel
  • develop program and policy guidelines
  • coordinate helicopter missions with other jurisdictions
  • make recommendations regarding helicopter capabilities
  • initiate action for aircraft incident reports and investigations
  • interpret and enforce applicable City and departmental regulations
  • develop, implement and evaluate Aviation Management plans
  • represent the division at technical symposiums
  • prepare reports, operational budgets and analyze expenditures
  • perform other duties as assigned
