Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
  • Completion of YMCA e-Learning and safety trainings
  • Adherence to YMCA policies for risk management, supervision, and child protection
  • Physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform all essential job functions including lifting up to 50 lbs and hiking up to 8 miles per day
  • Attendance at all staff meetings and trainings
  • Ability to model and support YMCA's mission and core values
  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification required
  • Lifeguard certification preferred
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices

Job Qualifications

  • Experienced in backpacking, canoeing, or camping
  • Proficient in Google Workspace including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Microsoft Office Word, Excel
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs and hiking up to 8 miles per day
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Wilderness First Aid certification
  • CPR certification
  • Lifeguard certification preferred
  • Ability to model cultural humility and YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility
  • Comfortable with technology and willing to complete mandatory e-learning and safety trainings

Job Duties

  • Co-lead 6-day outdoor expeditions for teens ages 13-17 including hiking, canoeing, camping, and exploring scenic Midwest wilderness areas
  • Create a positive, inclusive group culture that builds courage, confidence, and connection
  • Facilitate leadership, team building, and reflection activities in nature
  • Drive and transport participants safely to trip destinations using YMCA vehicles
  • Model outdoor living skills such as backcountry cooking and Leave No Trace ethics
  • Maintain high standards of safety, fun, and care for all participants
  • Assist with the overall functions of the camp daily schedule
  • Enforce rules and regulations to maintain discipline and ensure safety
  • Monitor campers and counselors and intervene when behaviors are inappropriate or unsafe
  • Support the YMCA's mission and camp operations as needed
