Job Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED
  • Completion of Delaware Department of Education Food Service Unit Course series within two years of employment
  • Current ServSafe certification within one year of employment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to read and follow recipes
  • Knowledge of USDA meal patterns or willingness to learn
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and fast-paced environments
  • Evidence of punctuality and good attendance
  • Physical ability to stand for at least four hours and lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation
  • Successful completion of written skills test
  • Satisfactory criminal background check
  • Satisfactory child protection registry check
  • Satisfactory Mantoux tuberculin test
  • Participation in direct deposit of pay
  • Health certificate required

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED

  • Successful completion or willingness to complete Delaware Department of Education’s Food Service Unit Course series within two years
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to read and execute recipes
  • Knowledge of USDA meal patterns or ability to learn
  • Prior food service experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to operate kitchen equipment and computerized systems
  • Ability to maintain professional development per USDA regulations
  • Good attendance and punctuality
  • Physical capability to perform job duties including lifting 50 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation
  • Willingness to complete a written skills test as part of the interview process
  • Ability to work in fast-paced and varied temperature environments

Job Duties

  • Serve as a leader in the kitchen in cooperation with the School Nutrition Manager
  • Assist in training School Nutrition Assistants and substitutes
  • Prepare menu items according to standardized recipes including specialized diets
  • Schedule preparation times to ensure prompt and fresh meal service
  • Manage portion sizes and avoid under or overproduction by adjusting recipe quantities
  • Maintain daily usage logs, meal production records, and temperature documentation
  • Implement HACCP food safety procedures during all food handling stages
  • Assist with receiving and checking supply orders
  • Operate and maintain kitchen equipment including steamers, ovens, slicers, mixers, and dish machines
  • Operate computerized point of sale systems accurately and complete end-of-day processes
  • Assist in dish room duties to prevent backup
  • Keep preparation, storage, dining, and equipment areas clean
  • Assist in maintaining perpetual and monthly food inventory
  • Participate in cross-training of various kitchen and service duties
  • Display positive attitude, adhere to personal hygiene and dress code standards
  • Follow federal regulations, Board policies, and departmental procedures
  • Perform related duties as assigned
