Weavers Way Cooperative Association is a member-owned food cooperative based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is dedicated to providing high-quality, locally sourced, and sustainable products to its community. Established in 1973 as a neighborhood buying club in a church basement, the cooperative has grown into a multi-store operation serving over 13,000 member households.
Store Locations
The cooperative operates several stores across the Philadelphia area, each offering a unique shopping experience:
- Mt. Airy Store: Located at 559 Carpenter Lane, this flagship store features fresh produce, a full-service deli, bulk foods, and a pet supply store.
- Chestnut Hill Store: Situated at 8424 Germantown Ave, it offers fresh, local, and organic produce, a full-service deli, bulk grains and spices, and a vast selection of grocery items.
- Ambler Store: Found at 217 E. Butler Ave, this store provides fresh produce, a sit-down café, bulk foods, and pet supplies.
- Germantown Store: Located at 328 W. Chelten Ave, it offers a large produce department, a deli with made-to-order sandwiches, wraps, and bowls, and a bulk department supporting zero-waste shopping.
Local Sourcing and Community Support
Weavers Way is committed to supporting local businesses and the community by sourcing products from over 300 local vendors within approximately 150 miles of Philadelphia. These products include hummus, bread, soap, produce, meat, and dairy.
Community Programs
Beyond retail, Weavers Way engages in community programs through its nonprofit arm, Weavers Way Community Programs (WWCP). These initiatives feature educational programs partnering with elementary schools to teach farming, health, and nutrition.
WWCP also operates urban farms at locations like Awbury Arboretum and Saul Agricultural High School, helping to foster community involvement and sustainable practices.
Cooperative Principles
As a cooperative, Weavers Way encourages member participation and operates under the Seven International Co-op Principles. The focus is on community building, environmental sustainability, and ethical business practices.
