Washington Navy Yard

The Washington Navy Yard, established in 1799, is the United States Navy's oldest shore establishment. It serves as a ceremonial and administrative center along the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, D.C.

Over the centuries, it has evolved from a primary shipbuilding facility to a hub for naval operations, housing several key commands and agencies.

Historical Significance

During its early years, the Navy Yard was instrumental in shipbuilding and ordnance production. It played a pivotal role during the Civil War, notably in the repair of the ironclad USS Monitor.

The Yard also witnessed significant events, such as the tragic explosion at the Washington Arsenal in 1864, which resulted in the loss of 21 young women working there.

Current Operations

Today, the Washington Navy Yard serves as the headquarters for several critical naval commands, including:

Additionally, the Yard houses the National Museum of the United States Navy, which showcases the rich history and heritage of the Navy.

Recent Developments

In April 2023, the Navy unveiled designs from five major architectural firms for a new National Museum of the U.S. Navy. The proposed 270,000-square-foot campus aims to replace the existing museum.

The development includes a new building, 100,000 square feet of gallery space, a ceremonial courtyard, and a marquee gallery. The location is preferred near the Navy Yard campus but remains undecided.

Visitor Information

The Washington Navy Yard is accessible to the public through its Visitor Center, located in Building 126. This building, constructed between 1925 and 1938, was recently renovated to be a net-zero energy facility.

It features wind turbines, geothermal wells, a battery energy storage system, and solar photovoltaic panels. Visitors can explore the museum, attend events, and learn about the Navy's history and operations.
