Established in 1991 by Dr. Glenn Ellisor, the organization has grown to encompass over 3,100 locally owned practices across all 50 states. It is the largest network of private practice optometrists in North America.

In 2015, Vision Source was acquired by Essilor International, a global leader in ophthalmic optics. This acquisition enhanced its capabilities and resources.
