University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM) is a public urban research university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Established in 1956, it is the largest university in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and one of the two doctorate-granting research universities within the University of Wisconsin System.

As of 2023, UWM enrolls approximately 23,000 students, comprising 18,500 undergraduates and 4,500 postgraduates.

Academic Programs

UWM offers over 200 degree programs across 14 schools and colleges. Notable programs include the only graduate school of freshwater science in the U.S., the first CEPH-accredited dedicated school of public health in Wisconsin, and the state's only school of architecture.

The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity", reflecting its significant contributions to research and innovation.

Campus and Facilities

The campus spans 104 acres near the lakefront, approximately five blocks from Lake Michigan and less than a ten-minute drive from downtown Milwaukee.

Athletics

UWM's athletic teams, known as the Milwaukee Panthers, compete in NCAA Division I within the Horizon League.

The university has a strong tradition in athletics, having won the James J. McCafferty Trophy as the Horizon League's all-sports champions seven times since 2000.

Recent Challenges

In recent years, UWM has faced financial challenges due to declining enrollment and budget deficits.

Measures to address these challenges include selling the chancellor's residence to cover an $18.8 million deficit.

Additionally, UWM has closed its Washington County branch campus and plans to close its Fond du Lac branch campus by June 2024 due to declining enrollments.
