About United States Army
The United States Army is the land-based branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, responsible for conducting ground warfare operations to protect and defend the nation. Established in 1775, it is the oldest and largest military branch with a mission to "fight and win our Nation's wars by providing prompt, sustained land dominance across the full range of military operations and the spectrum of conflict in support of combatant commanders."
The Army's primary responsibilities include preserving peace and security, supporting national policies, implementing national objectives, and overcoming nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.
Core Competencies
To fulfill its mission, the Army focuses on five core competencies:
- Prompt and Sustained Land Combat: Engaging in ground warfare with efficiency and effectiveness.
- Combined Arms Operations: Coordinating various combat arms including armored and mechanized operations, airborne and air assault operations, and combined arms maneuver and wide-area security.
- Special Operations Forces: Conducting specialized missions such as reconnaissance, unconventional warfare, and direct action to set and sustain the theater for the joint force.
- Setting and Sustaining the Theater for the joint force: Establishing and maintaining operational environments.
- Integrating National, Multinational, and Joint Power on land: Combining forces from various nations and military branches to achieve unified objectives.
Organization
The Army is organized under the Department of the Army, one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. It comprises the Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve, collectively known as the Total Army.
The Regular Army is the active-duty component, while the Army National Guard and Army Reserve provide additional support and can be activated during times of need.
Presence in the San Francisco Bay Area
In the San Francisco Bay Area, the Army operates Camp Parks, located in Dublin, California, approximately 28 miles southeast of Oakland.
Camp Parks serves as a mobilization and training center for Reserve Components in the event of war or natural disaster. It supports over 250 units with more than 20,000 Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers from the greater San Francisco area.
Additionally, the Army maintains a presence in San Francisco through various recruiting stations and community engagement initiatives. These facilities connect with local communities, provide information about military service, and support recruitment efforts.
