Recent Developments

UNC Health has partnered with Duke Health to build North Carolina's first standalone children's hospital, "NC Children's," in the Research Triangle region. This 500-bed pediatric hospital will include a children's outpatient care center, a behavioral health center, and research and education facilities connected to the health systems' medical schools.

Groundbreaking is expected by 2027, with completion in about six years, at a projected cost exceeding $2 billion.

Additionally, UNC Health has opened a new behavioral health facility for children in Butner, approximately 30 miles north of Raleigh. This facility adds 54 new beds dedicated to children and teens experiencing psychiatric crises, addressing the growing need for youth mental health services in the state.
