About UC San Diego Health
UC San Diego Health is the academic health system of the University of California, San Diego. It offers comprehensive medical services across San Diego County. Established in 1966, it comprises three major hospitals: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, and East Campus Medical Center in the College Area.
The health system provides a wide range of services including primary care, specialty care, urgent care, and emergency services. Its specialty centers include the Moores Cancer Center, the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center; the Shiley Eye Institute, offering comprehensive eye care; and the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, which provides advanced heart and vascular care.
Clinical and Research Facilities
UC San Diego Health operates numerous outpatient clinics throughout San Diego County. Locations include La Jolla, Hillcrest, Encinitas, Chula Vista, Kearny Mesa, Sorrento Valley, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Vista, Eastlake, and Temecula.
In addition to its clinical services, the system is a teaching hospital affiliated with the UC San Diego School of Medicine. It provides training to medical and pharmacy students and conducts extensive research through centers such as the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, focusing on advancing medical knowledge and patient care.
Recognition and Rankings
The health system has been nationally recognized, ranking as the top hospital in the San Diego area and 5th in California according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 analysis. It achieved national recognition in nine medical specialties, with obstetrics and gynecology, as well as pulmonology and lung surgery, placed among the top 10 in the nation.
