The University of Mississippi Medical Center

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), located in Jackson, Mississippi, is the state's only academic health science center. Established in 1955, UMMC serves as the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi, encompassing seven health science schools: Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Health Related Professions, Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, Population Health, and Pharmacy.

The main School of Pharmacy is headquartered on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford.

Hospitals and Facilities

The Medical Center operates seven hospitals and more than 200 telehealth sites statewide. On its main campus in Jackson, UMMC houses four specialized hospitals:

• University Hospital: The flagship hospital offering a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services, including the state's only Level I trauma center.
• Children's of Mississippi: Home to the state's only children's hospital, providing specialized pediatric care, including the only pediatric emergency room and Level IV neonatal intensive care unit in Mississippi.
• Winfred L. Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants: Offers obstetric and gynecologic services, along with advanced care for critically low-birthweight infants in its neonatal intensive care unit.
• Wallace R. Conerly Critical Care Hospital: Provides specialized intensive care for medical, cardiac, surgical, and neuroscience patients.

Community Hospitals

In addition to its Jackson campus, UMMC operates community hospitals and critical access hospitals in several counties, extending its reach across the state. These include:

• Hospitals in Grenada County and Madison County
• Critical access hospital in Holmes County

Faculty and Healthcare Network

UMMC's faculty group practice, University Physicians, comprises over 1,000 healthcare specialists and subspecialists. This network provides care in university hospitals, clinics on campus, and outreach clinics across Mississippi, ensuring comprehensive healthcare access statewide.

With more than 9,100 full- and part-time employees, UMMC is one of the largest employers in Mississippi. Its $1.6 billion annual budget significantly contributes to the state's economy.

This represents approximately 10 percent of the Jackson metro area economy and 2 percent of the state economy.
