The Trustees of Reservations, established in 1891 by landscape architect Charles Eliot, is the nation's first and Massachusetts' largest preservation and conservation nonprofit organization.
Dedicated to protecting and sharing the Commonwealth's exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological places, The Trustees manage over 100 reservations encompassing nearly 27,000 acres across Massachusetts.
Reservation Types and Visitor Activities
These reservations include a diverse array of properties such as historic houses, gardens, woodlands, parks, farms, community gardens, inns, campgrounds, and coastal areas.
Each year, more than 2 million people visit these sites, engaging in activities like hiking, swimming, farming, camping, and paddling.
Mission and Core Work
The Trustees' mission is to preserve places of exceptional scenic, historical, and ecological value for public use and enjoyment.
Their work encompasses:

Additional Programs
In addition to land stewardship, The Trustees participate in conservation partnerships, community-supported agriculture (CSA), environmental and conservation education, community preservation and development, and green building initiatives.
They own and manage 120 properties on 27,000 acres in Massachusetts, all open to the public, and hold 393 conservation restrictions to protect an additional 20,000 acres.
