About The Shubert Organization

The Shubert Organization, established in 1900 by brothers Sam, Lee, and Jacob J. Shubert, is America’s oldest professional theatre company and the largest theatre owner on Broadway. Over the past century, the company has owned and operated numerous theatres and produced hundreds of plays and musicals in New York City and across the United States.

Theatres Owned and Operated

The Shubert Organization owns and operates 17 Broadway theatres, including the Ambassador, Ethel Barrymore, Belasco, Booth, Broadhurst, Broadway, Cort, Golden, Imperial, Bernard B. Jacobs, Longacre, Lyceum, Majestic, Music Box, Gerald Schoenfeld, Shubert, and Winter Garden theatres.

Additionally, it manages six off-Broadway venues:

  • Stage 42 and New World Stages in New York City
  • Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia

Under the leadership of Chairman and CEO Robert E. Wankel, The Shubert Organization continues to be a leader in the theatre industry. Shubert Ticketing Services

In addition to theatrical productions, The Shubert Organization operates Shubert Ticketing, a leading international provider of ticketing services.

Shubert Ticketing’s consumer-facing brands are Telecharge for retail ticket sales and Broadway Inbound for group buyers, tour operators, and the travel industry, selling millions of tickets annually.

The Shubert Foundation and Archive

The Shubert Foundation, sole shareholder of the organization, is dedicated to sustaining and advancing live performing arts in the United States. In 2023, it provided general operating support totaling $37.9 million to 635 grantees, including not-for-profit theatres and dance companies.

The Shubert Archive, a project of the Foundation, documents and preserves the history of the organization, which spans over 120 years. It records hundreds of productions, such as "Cats" (original and revival), "Hugh Jackman - Back on Broadway," "Passing Strange," "Amour," "Dirty Blonde," "Passion," "City of Angels," "A Few Good Men," and many others.

Impact on Times Square and Real Estate

The Shubert Organization has played a key role in the rehabilitation and rejuvenation of the Times Square Theatre District. Its involvement includes participation in:

  • Manhattan Plaza
  • The Times Square Business Improvement District (BID)
  • The Mayor’s Midtown Citizens Committee
  • TKTS booth management

The organization is committed to maintaining and restoring its playhouses, helping to attract millions of visitors yearly.

In 2016, it sold its longtime headquarters at 1700 Broadway to Ruben Cos for $280 million, using the proceeds to pay off investors.
