Founded in 1914 in Somerville, Massachusetts, by the Rabinowitz family as the Economy Grocery Stores Company, Stop & Shop pioneered the self-service supermarket model in the U.S.

The company underwent several name changes, becoming Stop & Shop, Inc. in 1947, and later a subsidiary of the Dutch supermarket operator Ahold in 1995. In 2016, Ahold merged with the Belgian grocery conglomerate Delhaize Group, forming Ahold Delhaize, under which Stop & Shop continues to operate.

The supermarket chain offers a comprehensive range of products and services, including fresh produce, meats, seafood, dairy, bakery items, and a variety of general merchandise. Many locations also feature pharmacies, floral departments, and gas stations, catering to the diverse needs of their customers.

In recent years, Stop & Shop has focused on remodeling existing stores to enhance the shopping experience, with approximately half of its locations undergoing renovations since 2018.

In 2024, Stop & Shop announced the closure of 32 underperforming stores across its operating regions, including locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

This decision was part of the company's strategy to focus on strengthening its position in core markets and investing in store remodels and price investments.
