About Stone Ground Bakery and Wheat Montana

Stone Ground Bakery and Wheat Montana are two esteemed bakeries that have been serving high-quality, artisanal baked goods for decades. In 2021, Stone Ground Bakery, established in 1979, was acquired by Wheat Montana, a family-owned bakery and deli founded in the early 1990s. This acquisition combined their expertise and commitment to delivering fresh, wholesome products to customers across the United States.

Stone Ground Bakery

Founded by Hans Schmerse in 1979, Stone Ground Bakery began as a small European-style bakery in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hans's passion for baking and dedication to using old-world techniques and family recipes quickly established the bakery as a local favorite.

After Hans's passing, his children, Derrick and Tammy, took over the business, continuing the tradition of quality and innovation. Derrick traveled extensively, learning from renowned bakers worldwide to enhance the bakery's offerings.

In 2010, Stone Ground Bakery invested in state-of-the-art equipment, allowing for higher volume production while maintaining product consistency and quality. Today, the bakery delivers its artisan and sliced bread throughout the Wasatch Front and across multiple states through food distribution companies.

Wheat Montana

Wheat Montana was founded in the early 1990s by the Folkvord family, who had been farming wheat in the rolling hills north of Three Forks, Montana. They expanded their family operation by adding a mill and small bakery in nearby Bozeman to share fresh flour and bread with other Montanans.

The company's reputation grew, leading to the opening of a larger mill and bakery in Three Forks, which includes a deli offering made-to-order sandwiches, cookies, and cinnamon rolls—all baked fresh from their own wheat.

Wheat Montana's product line expanded to include cereals, seeds, and pancake mixes, shipping approximately 150 different products nationwide. The company employs over 150 people, most residing in Montana.

Product Offerings

Both bakeries are renowned for their commitment to quality and freshness. Stone Ground Bakery offers a variety of artisanal breads, such as ciabatta, brioche, sourdough, and specialty sliced breads.

Wheat Montana provides a range of bakery products including bread, flour, pancake mixes, buns, bagels, dinner rolls, and whole grains. Their delis serve breakfast and lunch items like fresh deli sandwiches, homemade soups, and pastries baked daily. Wheat Montana also features a gift shop with Montana-made products and specialty items.
